Book Week 2017 - Escape to Everywhere

This year we have Freya Blackwood, one of Australia’s most talented children’s illustrators, to thank for our beautiful Book Week theme poster. Her joyous and dream-like scene, rendered in soft watercolours, shows children of different ages and interests travelling by horseback, bicycle and even a pig to join a whale, a mermaid and a flock of fish in the sky.

Freya’s work has garnered many awards including CBCA Book of the Year in the Picture Book (2015), Early Childhood (2007, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015) and Younger Reader (2015) categories and the prestigious Kate Greenaway Medal (2010).

Freya says:

I never dared imagine that one day I might be an illustrator, let alone an illustrator asked to create the poster artwork for Book Week. Book Week was the most memorable event of the school year. So illustrating this year's poster was an amazing and nerve-wracking privilege.

The theme ‘Escape To Everywhere’ immediately made me think of the fantastical. But after consideration, I decided to take my love of drawing people doing everyday things and show them escaping their ordinary lives to a parallel place of wonder.
